Sid Griffin — The Journey From Grape To Raisin
(Label 51).
An American expatriate who moved to London to pursue his career, Sid Griffin was formerly known as the leader of the Neo-folk rock outfit The Long Ryders, and later, after his move, the bluegrass band the Coal Porters. His debt to The Byrds, Bob Dylan and other forebears of the Americana movement has always been apparent, and as an author, he’s written several tomes on the subject, including a detailed narrative about Dylan and The Band’s famed “Basement Sessions.”His solo albums are similarly expressive, albeit at lower volume. This well-defined Journey, produced by Nashville’s most prolific producer Thomm Jutz, is no exception. Check out the lowkey take on the Velvet Underground’s “Femme Fatale” and the unassuming but optimistic “I Want To Be the Man (My Dog Thinks I Am).”
