Shindig!

Shindig! Magazine Issue no. 80 of Shindig! has the fabulous MC5 on the cover and on page 38 two of Sid Griffin’s 1980s bands are included in The Best Of The 1980s article by the Shindig! staff writers.

Yes, of course one is The Long Ryders who readers of this newsletter know and love but the other is the lesser known cult heroes The Unclaimed. Formed by Sid and his pal Shelley Ganz in April 1979 in Sid’s tiny Los Angeles apartment The Unclaimed released a four song CD on Moxie Records in 1980 where two of the songs were Sid Griffin compositions.

Moxie was run by the late Dave Gibson, one of the key figures in the USA underground garage rock scene. Kinda a west coast Lenny Kaye. Although not a musician himself Dave really mentored The Unclaimed and in many ways tutored the band as to what constituted the 1960s Farfisa and fuzz tone sound. He is much missed.

Today The Unclaimed still play periodically and Shelley Ganz is still their singer but the other members, such as future Long Ryder founder Barry Shank, are long gone. So it is great to see Shindig! giving kudos to both The Long Ryders and The Unclaimed.
